INTRODUCTION:

As cliché as it may be, if you're a gay man in San Francisco, and haven't been to any of the city's bathhouses, you're really not doing San Francisco properly.

I was only going to be in town for a weekend for work, so I wasn't able to visit as many hookup spots as I wanted to, but I did thankfully have enough time to spend most of a night at Steamworks. And sure, I could have gone to a bathhouse that wasn't a part of a chain, but I don't live in Chicago, Toronto, Seattle or Vancouver, so it wasn't like I had a Steamworks back home, and I just wanted to make sure that I was going to a spot that was going to be clean, and full of hot guys. With only one night available to me to have fun with some of San Francisco's finest, I wanted to remove as much possibility of me having a bad night from the equation as possible.

Maybe there wasn't going to be the magic that I fantasized about happening in San Francisco as a gay teen, but I was still going to have a blast.

My boss had been on my back a bit too much about the meeting that we'd just had, and I needed to enjoy a bit of a steam bath while I was at it, to unwind a bit.

Just as I had expected, based on the fact that Steamworks is a franchise; it was probably the cleanest bathhouse I've ever seen in all my years of going to them. Relieved to see that, of course the next big test was going to be whether or not the guys were hot. Hot as a steam bath, let me tell you. I showed up to Steamworks a little late in the evening, and when I saw how many hot guys were there, I regretted not showing up earlier.

One thing to note is that you should keep the address handy, because the signage is just on the glass door you go in, and if you were looking for a big sign, you might miss it (or maybe I'm just easily distracted).

I was very impressed to see that even though the bathhouse is on he second floor, there's an accessibility elevator so that members who need it can still get into the club. There weren't any hotties that used wheelchairs while I was there, but great that there could be.

Just about every facility that you could want from a bathhouse is present at Steamworks. There's showers of course, a locker room straight out of a high school gymnasium, a large hot tub, porn stations, private and public play spaces, and probably my favorite part of the club... a full gym where you can either work out or watch other naked babes lift weights. I saw one guy getting oral while bench pressing (without a spot), so I offered to spot him, just to make sure he didn't hurt himself when he came.

-If you're looking for a discount, you definitely want to visit Monday to Friday between midnight an 6AM, when lockers are only $10

CONCLUSION:

If you're in San Francisco, and are looking for a nice clean bathhouse full of hot gay men looking to have a good time, then I can't recommend Steamworks strongly enough. You won't be getting the true spirit of San Francisco ultimately, but considering how much of the city is now overrun by tech companies and their employees, do you really want to experience that anyway?

I didn't ask what any of the guys I hooked up with at Steamworks did for a living, but I'm fairly certain that none of them were computer programmers. If they were, computer programmers have gotten a lot hotter, and I take back everything I've ever said about tech companies and their lack of hottness.

The facilities at Steamworks are off the charts in terms of being clean, looking fairly new, and including great bonus features like its gym. If the aesthetics of a bathhouse are important to you, you're going to be happy with what you find at Steamworks.

And while some might see it as a negative to have these bathhouse franchises that all look the same in different cities, I see it as a positive. If you love Steamworks, you can find that same experience in 4 other cities.

Pros

Steamworks was exactly what I was looking for. Like I said, it may not have been a magical experience, and the fact that there are half a dozen other locations that probably look very close to the same as the San Francisco location makes it a little less special than it probably should be, but all of the guys that were at the club were incredibly hot, and the spot was clean as can be, so that's all I needed.
  
The gym is something that I've heard of, but hadn't seen before in any of my local bathhouses. I love a big beefy guy, so to be able to watch musclebound studs lift weights with their dicks out... and I can have my dick out too? Perfect! More bathhouses need to install gyms!
  
The staff was incredibly friendly, and didn't try to upsell me on a more expensive membership like I've had happen before. I really appreciated that.
  
I'm very into the way that most of their special events start early, and end at midnight. It really shows an understanding that men who're coming to a bathhouse at 2AM aren't typically looking for a dance party. They're looking to hookup, with as little excess stimulation as possible. There's nothing worse than hooking up at a bathhouse while house music blasts through the space so loud that you can't even hear your partner moaning while you're boning.

Cons

I went into Steamworks with fairly low expectations, and it exceeded every single one of them, truly. From being accessible, to a level of cleanliness that I'm not sure I've ever seen at a bathhouse before, to being stuffed to the gils with hot and horny guys, I'm just not sure what negatives I could say about it.
  
Of course with a franchise, you're going to experience a bit of that McDonald's vibe when you first enter Steamworks, but is that really a bad thing? I know that some people probably might think it is, but I might also say that those people are snobs, who need to calm down a bit. Not every hook-up has to be an artisanal experience. And as we get older, it's okay to want things to be a little nicer. There was definitely a charm to a dirty bathhouse when I was in college, but I'm an adult now, and while I still like to go out and fuck strangers like a rabbit, I like that experience to be cleaner than I used to. It's the same reason my dorm room was a disaster, and now I hire a cleaning woman to come clean my condo once every two weeks.
  
The early starts and ends to some of the parties might also be a bummer to people who're going specifically for those themed parties, but I'm sure they understand why they're timed like that.
