Kink Shoppe Philadelphia Sex Events Review

INTRODUCTION:

It's not easy to make learning fun, even when the fun in question is all thing erotic. The internet may be a great presenter, but it's a mediocre teacher, especially when it comes to sex, since for the most part that just means watching pornography. Even when actually chatting with people in message boards and online communities about your fantasies and kinks, there's still a gulf between you and the other people.

If you're lucky enough to live in the greater Philadelphia area, however, there is an excellent place to up your game in the bedroom, regardless of what arouses you and your partner. Even though the name 'Kink Shoppe' conjures up the idea of whips, leather and pleasure through pain, the employees and teachers here are just as interested in teaching all sorts of tips and tricks to improve lovemaking techniques, ranging from romantic to ribald (they teach entire classes on oral sex skills).

ABOUT:

Walking through a bright, well-lit shop floor might not be the way that you'd expect to learn about BDSM, but there's a St Andrew Cross in the back of the Kink Shoppe, a store along a fancy row of shops in the Center City neighborhood of Philadelphia. The boutique is tastefully designed and never too cluttered, so it's easy to browse the shelves and tables for all sorts of toys designed for the bedroom and beyond. They have an amazing selection of books as well, from erotic literature to very specific guidebooks for practically every sexual act (unfortunately you won't be able to pretend you're reading something else when someone walks by). The first time I went it was more about time-wasting curiosity than anything else, but after talking to one of the employees about all the events they held in the workshop area, I quickly became excited about attending an introductory BDSM class for my partner and I.

The class itself was an excellent two hour overview that went into the psychology behind BDSM, as well as description of some basic tenets and practices (and clarified some long-held assumptions I had thanks to what I read online). It was the first of many that we ended up taking here, and of course it worked out quite well that when we wanted to buy some of the items we were able to play with in class, we could just go to the store floor and bring them to the register. Who would have guessed that synergy could be so arousing? It's also good to know that all the products are body safe (with many products made from silicone), because no one wants to risk getting an infection from something that's supposed to be so much fun.

CONCLUSION:

The internet is not known for its subtlety, and this can be alarmingly true when it comes to sex, which takes up quite a bit of all the traffic online. It's not that much of a surprise, then, that the antidote to this is the brick and mortar sex shop, and the best one in Philadelphia is the Kink Shoppe. Not only does it have an excellent selection of high quality sex toys (from lighthearted erotic board games to actual needles that can be used in BDSM medical play), but the friendly and knowledgable staff can answer any questions you might have not only about them, but sex advice in general.

The real fun and learning begins, however, once you start enrolling in classes, because it's an excellent way to not only learn about various aspects of BDSM and other bedroom activities, but it's a great way to learn about yourself and your partner as well. It's also a good opportunity to meet other people in the kink community, too. Coming the Kink Shoppe might not be the same thing as going to a sex club, but what you learn will definitely help you become one of the most popular people at the sex club.

Pros
  • For people who are new not only to the world of BDSM, but of expanding their knowledge of erotica in general, it really helps that the Kink Shoppe is first and foremost a shop. That means there's a lot less pressure in going inside and browsing or asking a quick question than walking into a sex club or BDSM dungeon studio. People explore their sexuality at their own pace, and not everyone is a super-social exhibitionist, and the bright, upscale layout of the Kink Shoppe and it's friendly approachable staff can really help bring someone out of their shell.

I think like a lot of people who grew up learning a lot about sex thanks to the internet, it certainly skewered my perspective of what sex is supposed to look and feel like, and it takes a much more personal approach to correct whatever we have been staring at on our screens for years. The things I've learned about what I actually enjoy about BDSM came more from talking to people at the Kink Shoppe (and eventually taking some of their bondage rope classes) than anything I just looked at online.

Cons
  • First and foremost, while the store and workshop area are all about sex, including some of the most kinkiest and even painful (needle play looks pretty extreme) fantasies, there is no sex going on at the Kink Shoppe. There is a strict store rule about no penetration and limited nudity when you rent the workshop space, and this will be even more strictly enforced when the employees or teachers run the classes (in addition to not wanting to run the location as a sex club, it also has to meet certain public decency laws as well). While you might be able to chat with some people in the store - whether browsing or in class - who share similar interests and fantasies, in no way does the store encourage solicitation of any kind. If you've come to learn about sex, you're in the right place. But if you've come for sex itself, then it would be best if you tried Saints and Sinners, or another actual sex club in Philadelphia.

I should also mention that while you can certainly get your moneys' worth in terms of the classes, the actual products are on the expensive side. At the Kink Shoppe, you are paying for the pleasure of shopping in a high class adult store, and the prices reflect this. Not only could you find better deals online, but most likely at other sex shops in the city as well (it's the expertise that you are paying for at this particular shop, of course).
