North Hollywood Spa Bathhouse Review

INTRODUCTION:

The twenty-something crowd is always a coveted demographic, no matter what you're trying to sell, even if it's gay bathhouses. This is especially true in Los Angeles, because it's the city that runs on marketing and numbers, and becomes a model of what's cool for the rest of the world. And with all this pressure on our shoulders, sometimes we just want to relax and cruise up to our favorite hangouts to let off some steam.

I've tried a lot of bathhouses in the city, and you can tell that as soon as you walk into North Hollywood Spa that they want to be the top name in gay hookups in the city, which is doubly challenging when you're up in the Valley. They make a great case for it, though, with some extensive facilities, and some great details that are hard to refuse.

ABOUT:

While North Hollywood Spa has a very discreet entrance - like so many other bathhouses do - the similarities pretty much end there. As soon you enter and pay for a membership or just a locker (membership is $15 for six months, which is worth it because of the deals you get on lockers and rooms), you realize that there are a lot more amenities than most other places, and that all of them work. I've been to other places in the city where the jacuzzi has been broken for months, or the sundeck is closed off for some reason and they won't say why. But everything at North Hollywood Spa work great, and definitely one of the cleanest places I've been to.

The main area is quite open, with the cafe (another great perk) beside a nice social lounge area, and the exercise equipment close by. The lockers and change area are of a good size, and it's easy to go from there to the sauna and dry spa. When I couldn't figure out how to get the sundeck I had to come back downstairs and ask a staff member, and sometimes they can be few and far between. I guess that for how much they spent on all the features, they couldn't hire as many people as they wanted. At least this is also reflected in the price, which is quite affordable, especially during the week, with some cheaper deals for locker and room rental.

CONCLUSION:

It's not easy for bathhouses to compete with Grindr or anything else on people's phones, but North Hollywood Spa does a great job at trying to bring guys in who aren't just a bunch of forty year olds. From a snazzy website to a lot of great features like a gym and sundeck and a completely revamped, fresh layout, it's definitely become a place for some hip young men to at least check out whenever they happen to be in the Valley.

While not needing a membership to join is always a perk (and helps bring in those who are just a bit curious and noncommittal), I decided to get one right after my first visit, because being able to work out saves on having to spend money at the actual gym, and there's always some other exercises I can try here that wouldn't be allowed at LA Fitness. North Hollywood really isn't that north when you think about it, so if you've got wheels (or even a subway ticket) and an open mind, I'd say it's definitely worth giving this place a try.

Pros
  • In Los Angeles, even in bathhouses, where the whole point is pretty straightforward, perception matters. North Hollywood Spa does a really good job at presenting itself as a modern take on the popular gay hangout, with the main idea being if it's a bit more updated and has plenty of features, then all those twenty five year old aspiring actors will come up here looking for a bit of fun. And hey, on a good Friday or Saturday night in the Valley, it totally works. Hell, even their website looks pretty cool.

Things like a good gym and sundeck are really big selling points for me, because sometimes when you come here on weekday afternoon and it's kind of empty, you can still get some exercises in and chill out on a lounge chair. And if a hot guy does stop in, then it's like icing on the cake.

The atmosphere also has a laid back feel to it, with movie and music posters covering the walls and a social area attached to the cafe that really makes it feel more like a club than just a bathhouse, which a lot of other, older establishments definitely suffer from. It's also great that they can do all this while still charging a pretty decent price for a locker on a weekday or weekend, as long as you get a membership (which is totally worth it).

Cons
  • Some customer service issues I had the first time I was there was smoothed over by some helpful tips the next few times I stopped by. It helps to remember that for employees here and at other bathhouses, it's like a service industry job. A lot of guests may not want to look at it that way, but tipping certainly helps the quality of your stay.

Just because you want to attract the twenty-something crowd with some discounts doesn't mean they are coming to rushing over to your business. I've been there on some Tuesday afternoons and Thursday evenings and sometimes it was pretty empty, or most of the guests were older gentlemen in their fifties, some of whom seemed more interested in staying in the pool than doing anything else. On the flip side of that, it can almost be a bit too hectic on a Friday or Saturday night (especially after the clubs are winding down), and the staff can get pretty frazzled and overwhelmed at all the people, some of whom have definitely had a couple drinks before showing up here. In those cases, it's good to partner up with a sober buddy, and you can both watch each other's back for any creepers.
