Goliath's Saunatel has you covered for that, and, thanks to its other members, for any happy endings that might come after. It's a small, discreet place just south of downtown Calgary, and it is certainly perfect for guys who are looking for some quick, private fun.

I found out about it through the nearby Texas Lounge, one of the better gay bars in Calgary. While I'm not sure if this bar and the bathhouse are owned by the same people, Goliath's Saunatel certainly operates as a bit of an extension of the Texas Lounge, which works out great for both of them. The bar is a great place to have a beer and meet some business-casual cowboys, and then you just have to brave the elements for a block or so to reach someplace a little bit quieter and whole lot warmer.

Goliath's Saunatel is all about giving you exactly what you expect and want, and as far as men's club bathhouses in a big city are concerned, that means you're still in for a real wild time. In some ways I'm surprised they're not more popular in Calgary or Edmonton, as the hot tub and sauna are the best ways to warm up quick on a cold Alberta night.

The discreet entrance is around the back of the building and very close to the Texas Lounge, the bar mentioned above. It's easy to get a membership even if it's your very first visit, and as soon as you paid the fees, you're welcome to rent a locker and begin to relax. There's the hot tub and the sauna room, which offer a very nice way to meet some really hot guys who are obviously there for the same reason you are. And when you're ready to take it to the next level, it's very simple to quickly rent a single, double, or extra room to really have some fun.

The design and decor is pretty minimal, but that's to be expected when the membership fees and rental rates are quite affordable, and I think I can speak for most members when I say we'd rather take that than resort-level service (save that for the actual resorts!).

-there are special events throughout the week, like discounts for locker and room rental on Mondays, flashlight parties on Tuesdays, discounts on lube and toys (excluding poppers) on Wednesdays, and discounts for members over forty years old on Thursdays (Daddy's Night)

CONCLUSION:

You can definitely check your inhibitions at the door when you enter Goliath's Saunatel, but it's important to keep your expectations in check as well. On weekends, you might hit the jackpot, with a sauna full of hot guys who just want to unwind after a long day of work and then dancing at the nearby Texas Lounge, but this place might not be the most happening spot on a Tuesday morning. That's the nature of all twenty four hour bathhouses of course, so with its great pricing deals and simple atmosphere, Goliath's Saunatel is definitely a good place to meet some eager guys who are also looking for some hot, wet fun.

Pros

  • Open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, Goliath's Saunatel has a huge edge on a lot of other sex clubs, gay bars, and bathhouses because it'll always be there for you. Whether you fancy a quickie at lunch, or feeling a bit randy on a Sunday afternoon, you can always rely on this place to have an open door. I really enjoyed the fact that in addition to the always expected sauna and hot tub, they had different choices of rooms you can rent for you and your new friends, not just a single one.

    The fact that it's been here in Calgary for many years means that the owners have a pretty good idea how it's being used, so they have no problem offering extremely affordable membership and room rental fees. They know few people stay for more than a couple hours, but they are able to make that work to the bathhouse's advantage when it comes to special discounts. Monday's 'dip and dash' is the very definition of the bathhouse experience, and it's nice that they went with twenty percent off lube and toys in the middle of the week on 'hump' day.

    On a serious and pride-worthy note, the weekly HIV/STD testing and vaccinations on Fridays is a very valuable community resource provided by Safeworks. The HEAT (HIV Education and Awareness Today) organization gives information on how to stay healthy and safe in the community the same afternoon.

Cons

  • Since many bathhouses are built for one thing, they rarely have much more in terms of atmosphere, so while you can definitely meet some men to live out some of your fantasies or just have a quick one-off, there's not much at Goliath's Saunatel that will keep you here much longer after that (even if you did pay for the eight hour locker or room). It's certainly clean and bright, but no one will ever consider it welcoming or - if very few members are around - fun. Related to this, because the membership fees are low, some of the amenities are not the best. The hot tub isn't always as hot as it could be, the snack bar selection is small, and depending on when you visit, the amount of staff working can be extremely small, so any concerns you have might not be addressed as quickly as you like. It really does reinforce the idea that you're only coming in here for quick visit.

    While being open twenty four hours a day is a plus in many ways, it does mean that members don't have to plan to be there around a certain time (like other sex clubs, which might only be open for five or six hours on certain evenings). The result of this is that sometimes, outside of busy hours (Friday and Saturday evenings and nights) there might not be many guests to meet and mingle with. The saving grace for this, however, is that hopefully you'll meet someone at the nearby Texas Lounge who really excites you, so there's really no need to try and find anyone at Goliath's Saunatel, because you and your new friend(s) can simply slip into the hot tub yourselves or rent a room.
