NaijaLez.com LGBT Dating Forum Review

INTRODUCTION:

I'm an American currently working in Nigeria, and one of the most difficult parts about living here so far has been the fact that LGBT rights in Nigeria are non-existent. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Nigeria, and since I'm only here for a few months, I had come here expecting to be masturbating a lot.

A woman at a club I went to recently however, clearly had good gaydar, and slid me a small slip of paper with the address, NaijaLez.com written on it. I was a little confused, and actually a bit worried at first. I know that same-sex activity is illegal here, but I didn't know whether or not there was a police state that would arrest men and women that they suspected to be LGBT. Perhaps a little paranoid, but people get stoned to death in some regions here for being gay. So being slipped a piece of paper that seemed to identify me (correctly) as a lesbian, was slightly concerning. I slipped the paper in my pocket, and didn't look at it again until I got home.

I fired up my laptop, my favorite web proxy, and typed in the URL. I was very excited when I read the words "Nigerian Lesbian Forum" at the top of the page! It was late though, so I would check back the night after.

ABOUT:

Of course I used a fake email address when I signed up for my new (and free) NaijaLez.com account the next day, because I still wasn't sure how legit this forum was.

The site is extremely basic, but very bold in clearly labelling itself as a lesbian dating forum.

The site has an anonymous forum for people like myself who didn't want to use their names (even a fake one), and there is also a verification process that the forum members let me know, sometimes took over a month to be processed.

I of course didn't want to wait a month to wait for processing. I was very lucky that I was able to convince a verified member that I wasn't a cop, but was in fact a real lesbian, looking to hookup discreetly.

This wasn't the smartest move on either of our parts, but we got away with it, and thankfully met up multiple times while my account remained unverified. I was homesick and lonely, so it was truly needed.

The forums have all of the typical sub-forums you expect from an online forum, but because of the law, many messages are short and direct, and mostly interested in sex. There have even been threads started by members who wish there was a little less talk of sex and hookups.

The forum's Help and Advice section offer important discussions about domestic violence, health and sex, and simply friendly advice about coming out in Nigeria.

FEATURES:

Because of the fact that same-sex relationships are illegal in Nigeria, it's very understandable that NaijaLez.com is a very basic LGBT dating forum, and doesn't have quite as many special features as some might expect from the best lesbian dating forums. That's not to say that it's completely without any bells and whistles, but considering both the risk that the people who run the forum are taking, as well as the fact that there aren't really any other options that I could find in Nigeria, I gave it a pass on not being features-heavy.

Some of the forum's best features however are:

-An easy to use search function so you can find posts by keywords or usernames

-A very well-written and maintained FAQ section for new and old members to use whenever they might have a question about their registration, messaging other members, how to be careful when sharing personal information with other members, etc.

-An anonymous sub-forum that allows anyone to post before their accounts have been verified by the site moderators

-A thorough and careful verification system that takes the safety of its members very seriously (it is suggested by the moderators to always be cautious with sharing info with people you don't know)

-A great event calendar that allows members to post about any LGBT events happening

-Follow NaijaLez.com on your favorite social media networks including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (keeping your privacy settings on 'private' is encouraged)

-An open channel to the site's creators so that members can suggest ways to improve the forum

CONCLUSION:

There's nothing else like NaijaLez.com for the LGBT community in Nigeria, so while it may not be the perfect LGBT dating forum, it's what they've got, and it's done so much good for lesbians in Nigeria who want to meet other women, but need to be extremely cautious about how they do that.

I'm going back home to the United States in a couple weeks, and I was worrying that I would lose track of what was going on within this incredible community, but because my account was verified just as I'm about to leave, I'm going to be able to remain an active member, and stay in touch with the women that I've met on the boards. There's even an "abroad" sub-forum in the site's chit chat section, which I haven't checked out yet, but I hope will have other women who have had similar experiences to mine, and perhaps even live near me so that we can meet up for a drink, and maybe more.

Of course a Nigerian LGBT dating forum is extremely niche, so if you don't live or work in Nigeria, you probably want to find dating forums for the LGBT community that have memberships closer to home.

EasySex.com has an incredible collection of

LGBT dating forum reviews that will surely have something to help you find some hot dates and hookups in your own city.

My experience on NaijaLez.com has been one I'll always remember though, and I hope that lesbians all across Nigeria find out about the site, use it safely, and find what they're looking for on it.

Pros
  • I'm not sure I have the words to fully express how brave the women who run and use NaijaLez.com are. Even though I used it, I did so partially out of hubris as an American, knowing that I was much less likely to encounter any serious legal consequences if I was found out to be a lesbian while living here.

The fact that there isn't anything else like this in Nigeria is both sad and impressive, and the impression that I get is that it's a very important site for the LGBT community in Nigeria.

Nigeria isn't a small place, so the forum's "Looking For Friends" section being broken up into different regions is very useful. I would most likely not have been successful in finding my hookup if I hadn't been able to zero in on the South East region, where I am.

Though like I said, the site is definitely a little bit sex crazy, the forum's chit chat section is also very popular. Simply being able to talk about every day things with other women from your own community is something that I take for granted, and it's beautiful to see that a very basic web forum can connect these women who are not free to be themselves in public.

While the lengthy account verification process is slightly frustrating (more on that below), it's also great to see that there's not just a bot approving accounts by people who might have bad intentions.

Cons
  • Really, anything that I could complain about is about as insignificant as you can get when it comes to a dating forum that's so vital and desperately needed by the Nigerian lesbian community.

Could the site use a bit of a facelift? Sure? Are some of the sub-forums a bit redundant? Absolutely. But the main purpose of the site is to bring the lesbian community together in Nigeria, and give them a place where they can discuss what it's like being a part of the Nigerian LGBT community, as well as find potential partners with a greater level of safety than if they were to proposition women they don't know at bars.

If I had to nitpick about a couple things however, I would say that while the account verification process is of course very necessary, it would be great if the site's moderators were a little more on top of expediting that process. My verification took over 2 months, and only arrived recently, when I'm now almost ready to go back home.

I also wish that the forum's Book Club wasn't so hidden as it is. If you look closely, right below the "Browse" under the forum title, you can see the word "Clubs" in a small and faint font. Click on that link to take you to the site's Book Club forum.

Past that, this is a wonderful forum that I'm so glad exists.
